The Installation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother as Lord Warden and Admiral of the Cinque Ports at Dover
The Cinque Ports of Kent and Sussex existed before the Norman Conquest. In return for the privilege of being exempt from the taxes and tolls paid by other towns, the Cinque Ports were required to provide ships and crews for the defence of the Realm.
The office of Lord Warden is one of the most ancient in England. Once a post of power, it is now purely honorary. The Queen Mother is the first Lady to hold this office and the first member of the Royal Family to be installed.
The presentation of the Keys of Dover Castle, a carriage procession with Escort of the Household Cavalry, the Installation Ceremony at the Grand Court of Shepway, and a display by the Red Arrows over the Royal Yacht Britannia, moored under the White Cliffs, combine ancient and modern in a day of colour and spectacle in honour of Her Majesty.
