KATHLEEN FRIZE-SMITH and BERNARD JOHNSON RACHMANINOV be
gan his career as a pianist. At the Moscow Conservatoire, however, he studied composition and won the gold medal for that branch of art in 1892. Seven years later he appeared at a Philharmonic Concert in London in the threefold capacity of composer, conductor, and pianist.
