: PRACTICAL CATS '

T. S. Eliot
For some time past Mr. Eliot has been amusing and instructing the offspring of some of his friends in verse on the subject of cats.
These poems are not of the kind that have been usually associated with his name, and they have not yet been published. With his permission, some of them have been arranged into a programme, and they will be read by Geoffrey Tandy.

: CHRISTMAS CABARET

Marriott Edgar
Entertainer
The Radio Revellers Kings of Syncopation and dancing to
The Dominoes Dance Band
Directed by Shirley Waldron
Broadcasts from this hotel-one of the biggest in the West of England -are well known to listeners. Last night a programme by this special Christmas cabaret was broadcast on the Western wavelength.
Tessa Deane , whose popularity on the air has continually increased since the days when she acted with Sir Nigel Playfair in Derby Day, is to sing among other numbers ' Smilin' Thro' ' and ' My Hero ' (from The Chocolate Soldier).
Marriott Edgar was a pioneer concert-party ar;ist and has been a pantomime dame for twenty-five years. He was for two years with the Co-Optimists, where he met Stanley Holloway for whom he has written much of his material. Nowadays most of his time is taken up with picture work. He has written dialogue for films starring Will Hay, the Crazy Gang. and Will Fyffe.
This afternoon he is to give his popular item ' Uppards a Lancashire version of ' Excelsior and his monologue on elephants.
The Radio Revellers are four very young men-their average age is barely twenty-one. Two years ago they started as novelty vocalists and have succeeded in getting really wonderful teamwork through intensive rehearsals. They have sung in films, in stage shows, and on the air, making a notable success in ' Palace of Varieties '.

: ' THE BARTERED BRIDE'

Act 3 of Smetana's Opera from the National Theatre of Prague
The Prague National Theatre
Orchestra
Conductor, Vaclav Talich
Producer, Hanus Thein
The scene of Act 3 represents the village square. A fair is in progress. Wenzel's love affairs are going all wrong, but, with the entry of a circus troupe, he succumbs at once to the pretty dancer of the troupe. It appears that the man who ought to play the part of the bear is hopelessly drunk, and Wenzel is persuaded to take his place. He stays behind the troupe to practise his bear's dance, in the midst of which his parents and Kezal the marriage-broker arrive to find him. They still want him to marry the girl to whom they have affianced him. but he has been tricked into vowing not to marry her. He now discovers that she is Marie, the girl to whom he made the promise, but she is in love with Hans. Hans finds Marie and teases her mercilessly. Kezal finds them, and soon afterwards the villagers, along with Micha, who recognises in Hans his long-lost elder son. The marriage contract only calls for Marie to marry ' the son of Micha ', so she is now free to choose between Wenzel and Hans, which she does to everybody's satisfaction. Micha agrees to be reconciled to his son and to give the young couple his blessing, and the story ends with universal rejoicing.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
