(A Series of Concert Party Broadcasts)
No. 9—'BUBBLES '
The Boscombe Pier Concert Party presented by Will Seymour in a special performance from
Bournemouth Pavilion
Introduced by Harry S. Pepper and Davy Burnaby
Last summer ' Bubbles' — ' Eleven happy clever Bubbles, Bursting to dispel your troubles ', as the company describes itself-played to 65,000 people during the season at the Pier Pavilion, Boscombe. Will Seymour has been running 'Bubbles' for twelve years now and thousands of visitors to Herne Bay, Bognor, Sandown, Paignton, and Weston-super-Mare must remember it with pleasure.
Among the members of the company to be featured in this broadcast are Nan Kenway and Douglas Young , who will be heard in a number of their own entitled ' Travelogues ' ; Patrick Colbert , a bass-baritone who has often been on the air, and Jan Ramsden , another broadcaster, who will give a display of ' Vivid Violinistics '. Incidentally, Jan Ramsden is not only a violinist: he is also an expert dancer and has played juvenile lead in revue.

: PROMENADE CONCERT

from Queen's Hall, London
(Sole Lessees, Messrs. ChappellandCo. Ltd.)
Part I
Isobel Baillie (soprano)
William Primrose (viola)
The BBC Symphony Orchestra
(ninety Players)
Leader, Paul Beard
Conducted by SIR HENRY J. WOOD
The Symphony in E minor, written in 1809, was not actually Sibelius's first symphony, for as early as 1893 he had written a choral symphony, ' Kullervo '. But ' Kullervo' has never been published and is not reckoned in the list of the composer's symphonic compositions.
When Sibelius wrote his E minor Symphony at thirty-four he had not yet completely found his own way. The Symphony is far less austere, far more easily approachable than his later, more mature works. But though romantic and colourful in a vein that Sibelius has long abandoned, it could have been written by no one but him. The striking, passionate chief theme of the first movement, the grim scherzo, the magnificent finale — all bear the stamp of Sibelius's unique mentality. Tickets can be obtained from [address removed], and usual agents. Prices (including Entertainments Tax): 7s. 6d., 6s., 5s. (reserved), 3s. (unreserved), promenade (payment at doors only) 2s.

: WORLD SPEEDWAY CHAMPIONSHIP

A running commentary on the final heats by Commander C. 0. Foley and John N. Lampson from Wembley Stadium
The World Individual Speedway Championship was won last year by Lionel van Praag. At the time of going to press, Jack Milne is leading this year, for each rider enters the final contest with a number of bonus points (arrived at by a somewhat complicated system of marking) awarded on two preliminary rounds and on any other speedway events of the season in which he has been placed first, second, or third.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
