(pianoforte) The three trios for piano, violin, and 'cello contain all Brahms's supreme qualities as a composer and remain three of the finest contributions to the literature of this particular branch of chamber music. No. 1, in B major, Op. 8, was originally published in 1854 and is, therefore, Brahms's first really ambitious work. But in 1891 he published a revised version that, except for the Scherzo, was virtually a new work. New thematic material was added to the principal themes of the three other movements and each movement reconstructed. The result is, as H. C. Colles points out, that ' in the progress of development the open countenance of youth becomes lined with the experience of age '

Norman Allin (bass) Frederick Smetana was, like all natives of Bohemia, an intense patriot and lover of the natural beauties of his country. He wrote a series of six symphonic poems in praise of Bohemia, entitled ' My Country'. The one now to be performed is the first, and its title refers to the River Vltava (or Moldau), Bohemia's most important waterway. The music sets out to describe the course of the river from its rise in a forest spring, through the meadows, past the towns, to the sea. It is obviously the simplest kind of programme music, made up of folk tunes and lilting melodies, but all the more fascinating for its freedom from complications.

Despite the fact that Brahms's four symphonies differ from each other both in emotional impulse and in various details of design, they are aesthetically of equal importance and belong to a symphonic style that may be described as romantic thought cast in a classical mould. The D major Symphony, for instance, is as lyrical and romantic in expression as any contemporary German music of the time. If the tragic Symphony No. 1, in C minor, was a great success on its first appearance, Symphony No. 2, in D, with its happier and more idyllic feelings, was an even greater one. Although conceived on just as big a scale as the C minor Symphony, the texture of the music is actually very much clearer, the melodies more cantabile in character, and the whole spirit of the music brighter - it has been called Brahms's ' Pastoral ' Symphony.
