The Maurice Cole Trio :
Winifred Small (violin)
Kathleen Moorhouse (violoncello)
Maurice Cole (pianoforte)
Chaykovsky's Piano Trio was partly inspired by the death of his great friend Nicholas Rubinstein (the brother of the more famous Anton). It is dedicated ' to the memory of a great artist', and was first performed privately in March, 1882.
The Trio has unusual features. In writing the piano part Chaykovsky wished to provide something that would have been worthy of so fine a pianist-for Nicholas was almost as great a virtuoso as his brother Anton - and yet at the same time keep a correct balance in the ensemble. Its form, too, is distinctive. It is divided into two parts: the first is in sonata form, while the second is a set of eleven variations on a beautiful theme that Chaykovsky with Rubinstein heard at a peasants' gathering. The last Variation worked out on fully developed lines constitutes the finale of the work.
