Fragments from Manfred....
Schumann I. Entr 'acte; 2. Ranz des Vaches (Song of the Swiss Cowherds); 3. Apparition of the Fairy of the Alps
Byron was eagerly read by the young romantics in Germany, as elsewhere, in the first half of last century, and Schumann was among the poet's most enthusiastic admirers. Manfred appealed to him strongly, and he set some music to it, meant for the most part to accompany the recitation of the poem. Small parts of it were laid out tor singing, and there are some purely Orchestral pieces. Schumann's idea was to have it performed on the stage, and it has once or twice been given in that way, notably by Liszt at Weimar. It has been given in full, also, a good many times on concert platforms, but for some years all except the Overture has been rather neglected. It is certainly Schumann at his best, gloomy and sombre music as befits the poem, but undeniably strong and vivid. At its first performance, which Schumann conducted himself, Richard Pohl was in the audience. He had a seat from which he could watch Schumann's expression, which was profoundly serious .and wholly absorbed in the music. ' I felt', Pohl says, ' that this had been written with his heart's blood, that he had spoken from his inmost soul.'
Four Conceits ............. Goossens
I. The Gargoyle; 2. Dance Memories ; 3. A Walking Tune; 4. The Marionette Show
Elegance, polish, and wit are the chief characteristics of Eugene Goossens 's smaller compositions, of which the twelve miniatures for piano, 'Kaleidoscope ' and ' Four Conceits ', are good examples. The ' Four Conceits ' were written in 1918 as piano pieces, but three years later the composer scored them for a small orchestra, which he handles with a light and deft touch.
