DURING WAGNER'S first period of residence in Paris he had the idea of writing a Faust Symphony. It was to express the composer's own despair and unhappiness in that city, for Wagner had much of disappointment and physical discomfort-even almost to the point of starvation-in his early days. This so-called Overture, which is much more a symphonic poem, was intended for the first movement. He based his conception on some lines ot
Goethe which speak of death as desirable. Actually, of course, Wagner was deceiving himself, as is clear from this vigorous music. He was the last man one could think of to ' long for kindly Death '. The course of the Overture passes from a slow, somewhat sombre introduction to a long passage of tempestuous character, followed by a slower, more solemn episode leading to a great climax, and the work ends in a mood of resignation.
CÉSAR FRANCK practically achieved in certain ways what Busoni, a generation Inter, set out to do-that is, put the new wine of modernism into the old bottles of classical forms without causing them to burst. In this symphony, in three movements instead of the usual four, the principal themes run throughout the work, linking it up as a whole. One in particular which occurs about the middle of the first movement, has been called ' the motive of faith '. With this symphony Cesar Franck undoubtedly influenced the French music that was to be written after him : the sanity, the beauty, and the classic nature of the work seem to have come as a breath of inspiration at a time when there seems to have been great need for them. Franck, working obscure and screened from public life in his organ-loft, achieved with this symphony the revivification of the French school.
