SIR HENRY IRVING had little knowledge of music, but he did have a distinct flair for choosing exactly the right kind of incidental music to give the colour he wanted for the emotional scenes of his plays. Ho would sit for hours listening to a band rehearsal and exercising his untutored but nevertheless infallible judgment. His selection of composers was no less astute. On two or three occasions he commissioned Sir Alexander Mackenzie to write the music for his productions.
