BOIELDIEU was so modest about his own work that, if the story be true, he used to take the completed sections of his early opera, The Caliph of Bagdad, to the Conservatoire in Paris where he was a professor, to ask his pupils for their verdict on the music. If they did not like it, he referred it to the great Méhul. He need have been in no doubt about the attractive qualities of his work ; nearly all his light-hearted and melodious operas won immediate success, and many of them held the stage for generations after his own day. For a time he was conductor of the Imperial Russian opera, but in 1811, at the ago of thirty-six, returned to Paris. and until his death, in 1834, dominated the operatic world there without much serious rivalry. The White Lady, produced in 1825, has always been counted his greatest success ; within fifty years of its production it was played over thirteen hundred times in one theatre alone. The libretto was made by Scribe, author of more opera-texts than it would be easy to count, and the tale is Sir Walter Scott 's Guy Mannering, in which the ghostly White Lady of Avenel contrives that the old castle and estate shall pass into the hands of the rightful heir; her betrothal to him brings the story to a happy ending. Boieldieu's music has a genuine Scots flavour here and there; several of the melodies were given to him by one Labarre, a harpist who had lived in Scotland, and it was no doubt the association with him which prompted the effective use of the harp at several crucial points, notably on the White Lady's appearances. The overture is made up of melodies from the opera.
