LIVE Introduced live from the Royal
Albert Hall in London by Martin Handley. Deryck Cooke 's completion of the sketches for
Mahler's final symphony reveals a different view of the composer's personality, and Britten's
Sinfonia da Requiem, composed in 1940, is a reaction to a world at war, expressing not only anger at war's destruction but also a personal pacifist vision. BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Gianandrea Noseda Britten Sinfonia da Requiem

Over fifty years ago John Dankworth flew in to
Johannesburg to give a short series of concerts in South Africa and, unaware of the growing menace of apartheid, joined the protest movement.
Dankworth returns to South Africa for the first time since then, to discover how music continued to be made during the years of struggle, and how it is faring in today's rainbow nation. In addition to meeting veterans Hugh Masekela and Jonas Gwangwa , he visits a music school in Daveyton township, and encounters younger musicians such as trumpeter Feya Faku , saxophonist McCoy Mrubata , and guitarist Louis Mhlanga. The programme paints a vivid picture of contemporary South African musical life, and questions its future.
