3/5. In Chabrier's time Wagnerism was all the rage in France and the music he heard on a trip to Munich in 1879 with Henri Duparc moved him to tears. Chabrier asserted that he only adopted elements of Wagner's ideals and was able to keep a firm hold on his own compositional approach. Donald Macleod considers this claim.
