Vaughan Williams is famous for his wistful, pastoral themes and his use of English folksong, but Donald Macleod reveals a composerwho penetrated the British psyche far more deeply. He begins his survey of the symphonies by looking at the enormous range of a composer who continued to surprise both his critics and supporters throughout his life.
