4: Oratorio and London Audiences
With Donald Macleod and Christopher Hogwood. During the 1730s Handel moved away from operas and began to write more oratorios, which were cheaperto produce and, as they were sung in English, appealed to a wider audience. But he did not abandon opera altogether, and in 1744 produced an English dramatic work, Semele, which was very successful. Saul (excerpts)
