Chico Buarque 's Brazilian version of The Threepenny Opera, adapted by Colin Sharpe , translated by Elizabeth Wynn Jones , is set to the rhythms of the samba and the rumba. In the Rio underworld of the forties, a time of dictatorship and Carmen Miranda ,
Max, the malandro, marries Teresinha, and all hell breaks loose on the streets; the prostitutes, the police and the industrialists are all unhappy.
