Hamburg Opera brought its premiere production to London in 1962. The libretto - by the poet Ingeborg Bachmann - is based on Heinrich von
Kleist's classic anti-war play of 1811, and centres around a prince who confuses his romantic, idealistic dream world with harsh reality. The opera - sung in English to a new translation by Frederick Bridgham - is introduced by Chris de Souza.
