For Lotte Lehmann when she sang with him Alfred Piccaver had the most beautiful voice she had ever heard. An Englishman, he was for more than a quarter of a century the principal tenor of the Vienna Opera. He died in 1958. NIGEL DOUGLAS , who studied with Piocaver in Vienna, tells the story of his remarkable career and introduces rare recordings of extracts from Rigolctio, Fidelio, Lohengrin, La Boheme and other operas in his repertoire.
