THOMAS SZASZ , the controversial American psychiatrist, discusses his book with AL ALVAREZ. Just as in the Dark Ages men created witches, so now, argues Dr Szasz, they create mental patients. Witches were imprisoned and tortured; the mentally ill are incarcerated in mental hospitals and subjected to all kinds of painful physical therapy. In each case society stigmatises the heretic for its own protection. followed by an interlude
