8: Kenneth Kaunda by GEORGE BENNETT of the Oxford University Institute of Commonwealth Studies
Kenneth Kaunda was born in 1924. When the Northern Rhodesia African National Congress was formed in 1948 he was one of the first to join. Later he became its Secretary-General and was a major figure in opposing the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. When Northern Rhodesia finally achieved independence as Zambia on October 24, 1964, Kaunda became its first president.
