: 'THE FOURTH OF JULY

A radio play by Alistair Cooke
Music arranged and conducted by Josef Honti
Produced by Felix Greene
(This programme was recorded in the New York Office of the BBC)
Felix Greene , the BBC's North American Representative, has just arrived in this country bringing with him from New York the discs on which this programme was recently recorded in the States. It was on July 4, 1776, while the American Colonies were at war with Great Britain, that the Declaration of In- dependence was signed. In it are contained most of the fundamental principles on which American democracy of today is based. The drafting* of the Declaration was carried out under Franklin, Jefferson, Sherman, Livingston, and Adams. Tonight's programme is based on historical documents, and will describe in a number of dramatic sequences the events that led up to the war with Great Britain.
Listeners will also hear some of the more notable debates and argu- ments that took place between the five drafters of the Declaration dur- ing the days that immediately pre- ceded it.

: 'GOODBYE TO LONDON'

a conversation between the retiring Bishop of London and F. H. A. Phillips
Dr. Winnington Ingram has spent the last fifty years in London, and has earned for himself a reputation not only as a great bishop, but as a man of tireless energy and good humour. Although over eighty years old, he still indulges in games. He has just retired from his diocese, and in a short time is setting off on a well-earned tour round the world.
Tonight he will tell
F. H. A. Phillips about some of the things that he most loves in London, and of his feelings on saying goodbye to his home city.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
