Don Pasquale is the tale of an old man, a wealthy bachelor who, with the delightful impetuosity of characters in Italian opera, has become possessed of a desire to marry. From the heedless way in which he accepts his fate, it appears to be immaterial whom he marries.
Like all self-centred materialists he wants to exclude others from happiness similar to his own, and when his nephew Ernesto (tenor) tries to marry Norina (soprano) he is furious. Ernesto ' expects ' financially from the old man's will. Hence his quandary. It is significant that the person who arranges the mock marriage between old Pasquale (baritone) and Norina, disguised as a young girl straight from the convent (she is in reality a lively widow), is Malatesta the doctor.
The first act tells of the old man's approaching marriage. Malatesta (baritone) first persuades him to wed the young girl from the convent and then proceeds to persuade Norina to go through with the plot. The action takes place first in a room in Don Pasquale 's house in Rome, and afterwards in the house of Norina.
In this scene Norina sings ' So auch'io', one of Donizetti's best-known arias-' I also know the magic power of a glance '.

Awake us, Lord, and hasten, Thy Holy Spirit give !

On earth may know Thee only,
Our thoughts give to Thee wholly, And all Thy goodness own I

This evening's concert from the Albert Hall celebrates the occasion of Sir Henry Wood 's fifty years of conducting. Sir Henry Wood 's first professional engagement as a conductor began on January 1, 1888, when he conducted the All-Saints Choral and Orchestral Society at Clapton. Since that time Sir Henry Wood has become one of the most distinguished conductors in the world, but the most important part of his work has undoubtedly been his forty-four years association with the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts.
This evening the programme includes the first performance of a ' Serenade to Music ' which Vaughan Williams has written specially for the occasion. It will be sung by sixteen leading British singers, all of whom have worked with Sir Henry Wood for many years both in London and at various famous festivals in the provinces. The entire proceeds of the concert, together with donations, will be devoted to the Henry Wood Jubilee Fund for the endowment of beds in London hospitals for the benefit of orchestral musicians.
