3.39 Pianoforte concerto in A minor
Grieg
1 Allegro moderato. 2 Adagio. 3 Allegro marcato
(Soloist, KATHLEEN MARKWELL)
Grieg wrote the Piano Concerto in A minor in the first year of his marriage, and it speaks eloquently of his happiness. He played the solo part himself on his first appearance in London in 1888 at a concert of the Royal Philharmonic Society. It is scored with the utmost delicacy and vividness of colour, and the piano part is brilliant and effective without being merely showy.
4.11 Enigma Variations Elgar
1 C.A.E. 2. H.D.S.P. 3 R.B.T. 4 W.M.B. 5 R.P.A. 6 Ysobel. 7 Troyte. 8 W.N. 9 Nimrod. 10 Dorabella (Intermezzo). 11 G.R.S. 12 B.G.N. 13 (Romanza). 14 E.D.U. (Finale)
One of the most beautiful examples of Elgar's art ' is the ' Enigma' Variations, which perhaps more than any other of his works has been the means of spreading his fame abroad. The title ' enigma ' refers to ' another and larger' theme (a well-known tune) which if played in conjunction with the present theme and the subsequent variations, fits perfectly.
These variations are dedicated ' To my friends pictured within ', and consequently each variation is prefaced with the initial or nickname of the friend ' pictured '. Referring to this novel idea Elgar says: 'It is true that I sketched for their amusement and mine the idiosyncrasies of fourteen of my friends, not necessarily musicians, but this is a personal matter, and need not have been mentioned publicly ; the Variations should stand simply as a " piece " of music. '
However, as one of Elgar's admirers once pointed out, ' We see these friends of his in the light in which they appeared to Elgac..... But, as you cannot make a portrait of anybody without also making a portrait of yourself for the eyes that can see it, the real hero is Elgar himself.'

: THE SERGE KRISH SEPTET

Serge Krish has been broadcasting for fifteen years, first with the Modem Trio, fhen with his Septet.
He is pianist, violinist, conductor, composer, teacher — idealist above all; for, well known as he is, it may be that in the future he wilt be best remembered for founding the New Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, which has given work to musicians in need of it and serious music to the poorer people of London.
In 1920 Serge Krish founded the Modern Trio-himself piano, Melzak violin, Mannucci cello. In 1923 they toured America and broadcast when they came back.
In 1928 he founded the Serge
Krish Septet, which has broadcast regularly ever since. He does all his own arranging, and the Septet is often on the air several times a month.
Since December, 1934, the New-
Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, composed of eighty instrumentalists, about twenty of them women, has given regular Sunday afternoon concerts at the Trocadero, Elephant and Castle.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
