Regional Geography
The Near East
An Administrator looks at the Near
East
Sir RONALD STORRS
The Mediterranean, the mid-land or between-land sea, is well named because it stretches between two continents, Europe and Africa, and reaches to a third, Asia. As you sail East along the Mediterranean nearer and nearer to the Suez Canal you come to a bottle-neck ; and round this neck you find all the countries that have been most important in the history of the world. In this the last broadcast of a group of talks on the Near East, a distinguished administrator will describe the political and economic significance of this narrow neck which takes in twelve countries — the corridor of communication between Europe and the Far East for oil, road, rail, and air.
Sir Ronald Storrs was Military
Governor of Jerusalem after the war, and later Civil Governor of Jerusalem and Judea. Between 1926 and 1932 he was Governor of Cyprus.

In this series people who have had some extraordinary experience are describing them before the microphone. Last week J., D. Beresford told listeners how he obtained news from nowhere, and the week before Sturge Whiting broadcast on Mystery at Versailles. Today several speakers will be taking part in the programme.

Thomas Tallis lived almost throughout the sixteenth century, and was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal under Henry VIII , and still in Queen Elizabeth's reign. Vaughan Williams 's sympathy with the music of that early age, and his profound knowledge of it, make him peculiarly well fitted to translate such a tune into our modern forms, and the simple eloquence of the old melody is preserved in all its own purity. Composed for the Gloucester Festival of 1910, the Fantasy was played there for the first time.

Symphony No. 3, in F Brahms
1 Allegro con brio. 2 Andante. 3 Poco allegretto. 4 Allegro
R. H. Schlauffer , the American biographer and critic of Brahms, points out that if Brahms's Symphony No. 3, in F, must be given a label. the most apt would be ' Portrait '. * This work ', he says, might be taken as a portrait in tones of a healthy strong, turbulent, tender, indomitable, kindly, aggressive, ironic, tempestuous, self-distrustful, incisive, concentrated, modest, fiery, rude, genial man-a person, in fact, just like the one who created it.' Brahms was all these things ; like most of us, he was a mass of contradictions. In short, he expressed in this symphony his own personality and nothing more.

: TEA-TIME TALK

' Making the Most of Your
Looks'
Mary Embrey
This is the first time in this country that a series of talks has been broadcast to women on making the most of their looks, although that authority on the subject, Mary Embrey , broadcast an experimental talk on the summer care of the skin last June. Talks on the care of the appearance have been a regular feature of American radio (both U.S.A. and Canada) for years. The subject is taken so seriously that it is among those broadcast to schools.
Mary Embrey first became interested in the subject when she spent a winter in New York seven years ago. She was held by its psychological, as well as its practical, aspect. Her regular weekly feature, which she introduced in the London
Morning Post five years ago, drew more correspondence than any woman's page feature had ever done before.
She thinks the attitude of most sensible women is a realisation that artificial conditions of modern life call for artificial aids, and that just as they visit their dentist to preserve their teeth, so they must give their skins, hair, and figures expert care to keep them in good condition.
She will give a second talk on the care of the skin, on November 18, and a third talk on the care of the hair on December 16.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
