: SMALL-BORE RIFLE SHOOTING

The Metropolitan Inter-Borough
Competition
A Commentary on the Final Stage from the Ham and Petersham Rifle
Range
The final stage of this competition is held in September each year at the Ham and Petersham Rifle Range, near Twickenham, the preliminary rounds having been shot off during May, June, and July. The five teams surviving to the finals this year are Westminster, Wandsworth, Richmond, Hammersmith, and Kensington. The Cup was won last year by Richmond.
Each team of eight shoots against the four others, the winning team of each heat scoring one point. The range is 100 yards, each team shooting at twenty-four 2-inch breakable discs fastened to a black board ; the team to break all the discs first is the winner. It is not stipulated that any one man must fire at any particular disc ; it is simply a matter of a team breaking the maximum number of discs in the minimum time.
There is a time-limit of three minutes per heat, but actually a heat seldom lasts more than ten' or twelve seconds over one minute. One heat was shot off last year in forty seconds.

: THE STORY OF A FAMOUS HOAX

' Swift and Partridge '
Shane Leslie
Dean Swift 's practical joke on John Partridge , the astrologer and almanac-maker, in 1708, is one of the supreme masterpieces in the history of the art of hoaxing. Under the name of Isaac Bickerstaff , Swift published an almanac of his own predicting Partridge's death on a certain day, and when the date had passed issued a pamphlet announcing the fulfilment of his prophecy. The report was widely believed and the unfortunate Partridge had considerable difficulty in persuading people that he was still alive.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
