Interlude
2.5 Travel Talk
'Flying Home from India'
F. McDERMOTT
In one of the most graphic talks of the term Captain McDermott is to describe the journey by aeroplane from Karachi to England-four thousand miles in five days. This talk is so real that listeners may well imagine that they are making the actual romantic journey, flying along the coastline of the Persian Gulf, spending the night at Sharjah in a comfortable bed, seeing the clerk in the desert checking particulars of the aeroplane under the shelter of its wing ('the only bit of shade there was '), flying over the Tigris and the Euphrates, arriving at Baghdad, reaching the Dead Sea, the Suez Canal, Marseilles, and so to England.
2.25 Interlude
2.30 Feature Programmes and Topical Talks
'Summer'
A miscellany of songs and poems and talks on walking, camping out, camp cooking, youth hostels, etc.
S. P. B. Mais
Few know the joys of the countryside better than S. P. B. Mais, who never takes the road if there is a field-path and so finds his way into the real England, into its loveliest and most secret places, far from well-trodden tracks. Today he is to take you on a summer walk through downland. Birds, flowers, the contours of the hills and woods, the exhilaration of a bathe-you will visualise and enjoy it all through him. He will have James with him - James, who knows how to pitch and strike a tent, how to get a fire going even if sticks are damp. You will capture the spirit and atmosphere of it all-the five minutes' rest. the careless song ; and those of you who are going to spend part of your holidays in the country will surely look forward to it all the more for this broadcast.
2.55 Interlude
3.0 English Literature-1
A play, ' Cap o' Rushes'
CAMILLE PRIOR
3.20 Concert for Schools
An Interlude by the Orchestra of the County School for Boys, Beckenham and Penge, Kent Conductor, HUBERT CLIFFORD
Hubert Clifford's Kentish Suite was awarded the W. W. Cobbett (1935) Prize in an open competition for a suite for school orchestra. Of the two movements to be played this afternoon, Dover is a hornpipe suggesting the atmosphere of the Kentish seaport, and Swift Nicks is a scherzo inspired by a reading of the exploits of a famous highwayman.

C. H. Middleton
In this, his last talk until the middle of September, C. H. Middleton will try to answer some of the questions that have been put to him by listeners. But this year-during his vaeation-gardeners are not to be without gardening talks, for one will be given each Friday by some well-known writer on gardening, among them, it is hoped, P. W. D. Izzard , of the Daily Mail, H. H. Thomas , author of best-selling books like 'Practical Amateur Gardening ', and Eleanour Sinclair Rohde, author of ' The Garden Lover's Days', and many other delightful garden books.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
