: 'THE ORDER OF THE GARTER'

The Rev. A. C. Deane ,
Canon of Windsor and Chaplain to
H.M. the King
The Most Noble Order of the Garter is the oldest and most renowned English Order of Knighthood, having been founded by Edward III in or about-for the precise date is uncertain-the year 1348. (A popular story about a lady who dropped a garter and caused Edward to utter the sentence which became the motto of the Order first obtained its vogue a couple of centuries later, and has no historic foundation.) The shrine of the Order is the Quire of St. George's Chapel, Windsor, and here at noon tomorrow the Knights, headed by Their Majesties the King and Queen, will meet for a solemn service-the first of the kind to be held since 1914. In his talk Canon Deane will give an account of the Order, its history, its statutes, and its officers. He will also describe the arrangements made for the magnificent procession and service that will take place tomorrow.

Karol Szymanowski , whose death was announced a few months ago, was one of the leading contemporary Polish composers. He received his musical education in Warsaw and began his career as a composer by following in Chopin's footsteps. But although he had never - quite lost his fondness for national and Chopinesque forms, he soon launched out in large-scale works on lines which Chopin never attempted, such as the Quartet No. 1, for which he was awarded in 1922 a prize by the Polish Minister of Education, and the Quartet No. 2, which will be heard this evening in England for the first time.

: THE WEEK'S GOOD CAUSE

An appeal on behalf of THE CANCER DEPARTMENT OF THE ROYAL VICTORIA AND WEST HANTS
HOSPITAL, BOURNEMOUTH, by Col. Sir
CHARLES GORDON-WATSON ,
K.B.E., C.M.G., F.R.C.S.
The Royal Victoria and West Hants Hospital has already established departments for the treatment of special diseases, and patients are received from a wide area. The sum of £15,000 is required in order that a well-equipped radiological department may be established for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Owing to the numerous advances made during the last few years, there are few cases of cancer that cannot be relieved by radium and deep X-ray therapy. The appeal, which is to be made by the Vice-President of the Royal College of Surgeons, has the support of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, and the money is needed for the purchase of radium, deep X-ray therapy plant and other equipment, and for the provision of beds ; twenty-five per cent. of the contributions will be devoted to cancer research.
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and should be ad dressed to [address removed]

Overture (Suite in E minor)
Reznicek, arr. Gerrard Williams
Scherzo (L'Apprenti sorcier) (The
Magician's Apprentice)........Dukas
As Goethe tells the story, and Dukas presents it to us in merry music, the apprentice seizes the chance of his master's absence to pronounce the magic spell which sets the broomstick to work carrying water to the house. But he finds, when it is too late, that he has forgotten the words which undo the spell, and the carrying of water goes on until the house is well-nigh engulfed. In desperation the apprentice seizes an axe an'd chops the stick in half, only to find that his predicament is twice as bad as before, since both halves carry on the work with equal energy. The master magician returns-the tremendous blast of the brass instruments which announces that is unmistakable-just in time to avert final catastrophe.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
