' The Monsoon Lands : China and Japan-Japan 4, The North
A. B. LOWNDES, B.Com.
In his final talk on Japan today Mr. Lowndes is to take listeners north and show them the changing scenery. Hokkaido in the snow ; ice roads ; the thaw, and where the snow goes to ; spring cleaning; open fields; cattle and sheep, peas and beans ; houses, heating, and clothing-all these will come into his talk.
And listeners will hear about dog-teams, lumber work, fisheries ; about Karafuto and its salmon, herring, and crab. They will be interested to hear, too, something of the lives of children of their own age who live in North Japan. In the picture on this page they will see a little Karafuto boy giving a lesson to his fellow pupils.

' La Reine'
Haydn's Symphony ' La Reine ' owes its name to Queen Marie Antoinette , who, it is said, was very fond of it. It is the fourth of the Paris Symphonies. It is scored for quite a small orchestra : strings and two flutes, oboes, bassoons, and horns. The second movement is notable for a set of variations on the theme of a French song, ' La gentille et jeune Lisette '.
Russian and Ludmilla Glinka was the father of modem Russian music, and Russian and Lud milla , his second opera, was one of the first big works of a really national character which the composer produced. The tale is founded on an early poetical romance by Pushkin. It is a blend of fairy lore and old Russian legend. Ludmilla, the daughter of a Grand Duke, has three suitors, of whom she prefers the Knight Russian. She is carried off by magic powers, and the whole story is taken up with Russian's heroic conflict with these and his overcoming of one dread magic spell after another to win his bride in the end.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

To read scans of the Radio Times magazines from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, you can navigate by issue.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
