' A Baby on Tristan da Cunha '
Mrs. R. ROGERS
When there is ice on the road and the milkman's an hour late and there is no second delivery, we complain, and Mrs. Rogers in London would probably do the same. But on Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic, a thousand miles from the nearest inhabited land, she had to keep house for three years on whatever food the crofters might bring her and her husband in exchange for teaching in the mission school. Haifa sheep and a sack of potatoes, if her luck was in. Here her son was born for the simple reason that the ship which was to take her to civilisation never turned up. JNo doctor, no certified midwife. She and her child survived. One night he was ill and medicines were low and a gate roaring from the Atlantic lifted a lump of thatch from the roof. Her husband rang the church bell to summon the crofters, who turned out to the rescue. In this talk is as vivid a real-life story as any listener could wish to hear.

A Discussion on The One-Maid
Problem
We may have many interests in the outside world, but there is no getting away from the fact that our lives arc made smooth or easy by what goes on inside the house. So in this series of talks there will be discussions on some of the problems that at one time or, another may threaten either the creature comforts or the peaceable atmosphere of many homes.
For instance, the series opens with two speakers on 'The One-Maid Problem '. First Mrs. Thorpe, who, in order to gain first-hand knowledge, has taken daily jobs in houses where one maid is kept, will make some observations on her experiences ; and then will follow comments from the standpoint of a ' mere man '.

: MUSIC FROM THE MOVIES

with LOUIS LEVY AND HIS
SYMPHONY
This orchestra is new to the air, but it is well known to the ears of cinemagoers for its musical backgrounds to films made by a British company. The combination-there are over thirty players-will come to the microphone every fortnight with a selection of popular songs and tunes from the films, British, Continental, and American. None of the material used will be treated in the usual stereotyped ' dance music ' style, and special orchestrations will be devised by Peter Yorke

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

To read scans of the Radio Times magazines from the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, you can navigate by issue.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
