Travel Talk
' Middle Europe'
6—' The Rhine Gorge '
VERNON BARTLETT
The Rhine has been one of the principal waterways in Europe for centuries. It ts likely to remain so, for it passes through seme of the most populous regions, and some of the richest in mineral resources. The Rhine Gorge is the subject of Vernon Bartlett 's talk this afternoon. The steep slopes are covered with terraced vineyards or cherry trees, and on the banks themselves are ruined castles that savour delightfully of a romantic medievalism. Mixing with the river traffic-tugs towing barges against the strong current -are children in canoes. And it is this great river that divides two very different civilisations—that of the Eastern Franks (nowadays known as the Germans), and that of the Western Franks, or French.

Music of Beethoven
THE B B C MIDLAND ORCHESTRA

Conducted by LESLIE HEWARD
Overture and Ballet Music (Prometheus)
Beethoven wrote much less for the stage than he had a desire to do. His one opera, Fidelio, that has come down to us, does not exhaust his aspirations in that form ; he was always anxious to compose others and would have done so could he have found libretti to satisfy both his moral and literary preferences. But he did write stage and dramatic incidental music whenever he had the chance, mostly to order. This ballet of Prometheus is an example, an early one. When he came first to Vienna, a ballet master by the name of Vigano, and his wife, Maria Medina , were the favourites of the Viennese public, and being called upon to produce a new ballet in honour of the Empress, offered an commission to write the music to the promising young composer. The scenario supplied to Beethoven was an innocuous version of the classic myth, for Prometheus is here represented not as stealing fire from the heavens, but as bringing his statues to life with the aid of dancing, drama, and music.
Symphony No. 9, in D minor, Op. 125 i. Allegro ma non troppo, un poco maestoso ; 2. Scherzo, molto vivace ; 3. Adagio molto e cantabile
It is not at all unusual to play the Ninth Symphony in this way, without the choral finale ; if chorus and soloists are not available, there is no harm in ending with the slow movement. In two other works, the Piano Sonatas, Op. 109 and Op. in, Beethoven has actually ' allowed the conclusion of the whole matter to rest in a slow movement of this type-a paradise like that of Dante as Sir Donald Tovey has finely put it, ' in which the only action and the only movement are the ascent from Heaven to higher Heaven as measured by the enhanced glory in Beatrice's eyes '.

' Mrs. Pankhurst'
THELMA CAZALET
With Mrs. Pankhurst's death in 1928 passed away one of the few surviving protagonists of the Suffragette movement. Her untiring efforts to secure equality for women met with a mixed reception : to many her aims seemed to be ludicrously fanatical. Today, however, with the suffrage won and women working in every class of life, she is recognised for what she really was-a plucky woman with an amazingly constructive brain.
Tonight Thelma Cazalet gives her reminiscences of this great feminist. Miss Cazalet, like her brother, Captain Victor Cazalet , is a Member of Parliament. She has led an active public life. For example, she has had a good deal of experience of local government work-the kind of work made possible for women only through the labours of Mrs. Pankhurst and others like her.

Though born at Vienna in 1900 of Czech family, Ernst Krenek is considered one of the leading composers of the younger German school. He studied composition under Franz Schreker in Vienna and in Berlin, where he now lives. ' He appears to be swayed', says Edwin Evans , ' by strictly musical, not to say even technical, impulses, and rarely, if ever, allows his course to be deflected by emotional or temperamental considerations. He takes the " linear " vie.v of polyphony, which prevails in so much recent German music, and is in fact one of its most uncompromising adherents.'

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
