A Burlesque in Three Scenes with Music and a Moral
(From Bristol)
This satirical burlesque tells how Bertie the Bank Clerk fell in love with a rich girl ; how she played a trick to find out whether he really loved her; and what the consequences were. Michael Sayer , who has written the music, has a gift for turning out catchy tunes, and we are promised several in Bertie the Bank Clerk that people are likely to find themselves humming afterwards.

The First Hundred Years of a British
A Programme in Celebration of the Centenary of the Great Western Railway
Devised as a Journey from Paddington to Penzance
The idea of a railway linking London with the West Country originated in Bristol. In the autumn of 1832 the Bristol Corporation, the Chamber of Commerce, and other bodies formed a committee to discuss the undertaking, and in March, 1833, they appointed an engineer : Isambard Kingdom Brunei, the twenty-seven-year-old son of the engineer of the Thames Tunnel. On August 19 of the same year the directors met for the first time, adopted
. the title ' Great Western Railway ', and drew up the prospectus of the new Company. But more than two years passed before Parliamentary permission could be obtained for the construction of the line.
Even then the history of the great line was by no means uneventful. The authorities of Eton College brought an action against the Company because the trains stopped at Slough. As early as 1845 the broad 7-foot gauge adopted by Brunei was causing acute difficulty with the adjoining narrow gauge lines and ' the Battle of the Gauges' continued for many years. (The G.W.R. finally abandoned the broad gauge only in 1892.) Then there were legal and Parliamentary tussles with rival companies; the engineering romances of the making of the Box Hill Tunnel (then the longest in the country) and the great Severn Tunnel ; the ' atmospheric system ' fiasco ; the financial crisis of x866, when the Company nearly became bankrupt ... altogether one of the most exciting chapters in British industrial history.


Although Orlando di Lasso, contemporary of Palestrina, was one of the greatest and most prolific composers of his day, his early life is somewhat obscure. He was born at Mons in 1530 or 1532, and died at Munich in 1594. At the age of eight di Lasso had already attracted attention by his musical gifts, which eventually obtained him a place in the service of the Viceroy of Sicily. A year or so after his voice broke he is supposed to have visited Rome as the guest of the Archbishop of Florence, and after six months was appointed choirmaster of the Church of St. John Lateran.
Di Lasso appears to have enjoyed the patronage of several cultured and distinguished noblemen. In 1555 his first two publications appeared-a book of Italian Madrigals and a collection of madrigals, chansons, motets in four parts. This was the beginning of an immense stream of sacred and secular music that issued from his pen. But from 1563 most of his compositions were sacred in character, as he held the important post of choirmaster to Duke Albert of Bavaria, for whose choir he wrote most of his music.
Eda Kersey is practically a self-taught violinist. After a few years of guidance in the difficult early stages of violin technique, she then carried on entirely by herself, supplementing her studios with constant attendances at chamber and orchestral concerts in order to absorb the methods and styles of all the great violinists from Kreisler downwards. Talking of her career, Miss Kersey says : ' At the age of ten, when we moved from Goodmayes, Essex, to Southsea, I suddenly realised that the violin was my vocation. I studied under one or two local teachers, then at the age of fourteen I heard Kreisler and from that moment set my heart on becoming a concert soloist. I gave my first concert at sixteen, which was a success in a small way. Since that time I have learned much from hearing great violinists, and the rest has been done by hard work. I practise for about seven hours a day.'
Ernest John Moeran began to compose already during his schooldays at Uppingham, where music has always been enthusiastically cultivated. As with many others of the younger generation of English composers, his original work goes hand-in-hand with an enthusiasm for native folk music; that of Norfolk, where a good part of his life has been spent, has always attracted him specially, as listeners have already had opportunities of hearing for themselves in his ' Norfolk Rhapsodies ' and other works.
' Songs of Springtime ' consists of settings of seven Elizabethan poems by Shakespeare, Fletcher, Thomas Nashe , Samuel Daniel , William, Browne, and Herrick. These songs all show careful workmanship, delicate poetic feeling, and freshness of melodic invention.

Ernst von Dohnanyi , the Hungarian composer, pianist, and conductor, has been well known in England since 1898. He used to appear regularly as soloist in Sir Henry Wood 's Saturday Afternoon Symphony Concerts, and his Variations on a Nursery Theme for piano and orchestra and his chamber music hold an esteemed place in the repertoire.
The Suite, ' The Veil of Pierrette', consists of some of the numbers of a ballet that was first produced in Dresden a quarter of a century ago.
