Friedrich von Flotow was born in Germany a year before Wagner, and died within a few days of him. He wrote a number of operas, of which Martha and Stradella are the best known. Martha became famous all over the world, particularly in England, where the impression that it was almost an English opera has stuck. Stradella, on the other hand, though it had great success in Germany, was a dead failure in London, and was never even produced in Paris. The overture, however, is very often played. Flotow was much in Paris; the early part of his artistic career was spent there, and later in life he returned and was elected a member of the Institute.
The drama of the Norwegian poet Bjornson, Sigurd Jorsalfar (Sigurd the Crusader), is a tale of Norway in the time of the Crusades. Sigurd and his brother, Eystein, sons of the great Harald, are fierce rivals, each reigning over part of Norway. At the end of the play they become reconciled, and dedicate themselves jointly to the service of their country. Grieg wrote incidental music for the production of the play, afterwards recasting several of the movements in the form of a very effective suite, second in popularity only to the two suites from his music to Ibsen's Peer Gynt. The three movements of the suite, of which this is the third, have all the vividly picturesque manner of Grieg.

Appeal on behalf of THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF YOUNG FARMERS' CLUBS by Earl De La WARR
The National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs is open to any boy or girt between the ages of ten and twenty-one. Its aims are to equip the rising generation, at the most receptive age, with a practical knowledge of livestock and horticulture, and, by fostering the Club spirit, to give to boys and girls in rural surroundings all those interests and activities which were denied to the older generation.
While there are 14,000 villages in England and Wales, there are as yet only 200 Clubs. It is the aim of the Federation to put a Club in every village.
Contributions will be gratefully received and acknowledged by Earl De La Warr , [address removed]

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
