Quartet of Sailors
The scone is laid on board an old-time sailing-ship. Sailors tire dancing a jolly hornpipe and the ballad tells of the tender parting of William and Black-Eyed Susan. As the ' lessoning boat' rows back to land, there is hoard the sound of a phantom hornpipe, a weird, unearthly tune, in which the mocking spirit of the sea laughs at the truth of lovers' vows.

Fandango (tho Duenna)
A LFRED REYNOLDS has boon for years intimatdy associated with Sir Nigol Playfair's post-war adventure at the Lyric Theatre,
Hammersmith. His first real opportunity at that theatre came with the production of Sheridan's The Duenna, the music of which was originally composed by Thomas Linley. 'When wo were planning our production,' Sir Nigel Playfair has recorded in his book ' Hammersmith Hoy ,' it was obvious that the music would need a very great deal of overhauling, and indeed re-writing; and for the purpose we called in Mr. Reynolds. Mr. Reynolds was already a very distinguished pianist, and he conducted for us in the ' Insect Play.' Ho is such a modest man that it was with a great deal of difficulty that I persuaded him of his competence for the task: when he sat down to it, however, he became enthusiastic, and by the time he had finished, there was really a good deal more Reynolds than Linley in the composition.' From that day, each of the later Lyric, Hammersmith, productions has had, if not ' more Reynolds than X ' in the composition, at least enough Reynolds to make the music a very fascinating and important part of the whole.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
