Mrs. Dale has had an accident during a driving lesson with Roddy; a man called Fontana was knocked down and had to be taken to hospital. Mrs. Dale has been in very low spirits about it and she was greatly relieved when she heard that he was about to be discharged, but on Wednesday there was an unexpected development.

Scotland Yard discover that the body found in Richard Ferguson 's flat was Max Wyman. Mark Elliot returns the missing signet ring to Paul Temple, but when he and Steve take it to Mrs. Gulliver, as Richard Ferguson instructed, they find that she has been beaten up. Richard phones and makes another appointment with Paul Temple , but Mark Elliot keeps it.
