The tragedy is based on the trial in Italy of Vittoria Corombona in the late sixteenth century. Through his love for her, the Duke of Brachiano was prompted to murder both his own wife, sister to the Grand Duke of Florence, and Vittoria's husband, nephew to a Cardinal. The play deals with the revenge of the Duke and the Cardinal and the destruction of Corombona's entire family
