: Stone of Destiny

To mark the return of Scotland's most potent symbol, the Stone of Scone, writer Andrew O'Hagan examines the myths and historical debate that surround the controversial piece of sandstone. Until it was transported to
Scotland two weeks ago, the stone was housed in Westminster Abbey, where it had rested since being stolen by Edward I in the 13th century and had been used in the crowning of monarchs. O'Hagan looks beyond the political debate and reveals the history of another, black marble, stone that many claim is the real Stone of Destiny.

: Assignment

The Russian Disease
In Russia there is growing alarm overthe state of the nation's health. Since the collapse of communism, the average male life expectancy has fallen by six years. Of particular concern is the health of the young-the death rate among children is three times higher than in Britain. Perplexed Russian officials blame environmental problems but, as Julian Pettifer discovers, there may be another cause.

: TX: Two Melons and a Stinking Fish

Provocative arts documentary strand.
Sarah Lucas is one of a generation of young British artists currently feted by the art world. This intimate portrait examines both the artist and her work, which is concerned with questions of identity and sexuality and is often shamelessly vulgar. Her best-known creation is composed of two fried eggs and a doner kebab on a table, while another entitled Bitch uses two melons and a dried fish. Friends and colleagues who appear include artists Angus Fairhurst, Gary Hume and Damien Hirst. Hanging Around, directed by Damien Hirst , is at 11.50pm.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
