In 1983, aftera humiliating defeat by Margaret Thatcher , Labour elected Neil Kinnock as its new leader. His youth and energy offered a new image as he attempted to unite the party behind his plans for reform. But the adoption of a new symbol for Labour, the red rose, and the appointment of Peter Mandelson to relaunch the party caused disquiet among critics who feared Kinnock's underlying purpose was the destruction of the Left.
