: Cheryomushki

Another Bite of the Cherry
To mark the 20th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich 'sdeath, this documentary analyses the origins of his only musical, Cheryomushki, composed in 1958. Taking its title from the first of Moscow's high-rise flats built under Kruschev, the piece thrived in the liberal atmosphere that briefly prevailed between the oppressive regimes of Stalin and Brezhnev. It pokes fun at the middle classes, belittles members of the Communist
Party, and demonstrates a witty, charming, sometimes frivolous side to the character of the Russian composer.
Current residents of the real-life
Cheryomushki estate, now a slum, talk of their disaffection at the failure of Russian dream. It is a failure their dwellings have come to symbolise.

: Rumble in the Jungle

By 1974, Muhammad Ali was considered to be a faded boxingforce, a shadow ofthe mercurial youngster who shocked the world a decade earlier. He was older, slower and had lost three of his best years because of a refusal to serve in the Vietnam War.
World champion George Foreman was at his peak, a fearsome fighting machine who had annihilated previously unbeaten Joe Frazierto win the title. He was, as his trainercalled him, "a monster", considered invincible.
But when Foreman defended against Ali in Zaire, Ali defied the passage of time, tauntingthe champion with his famous "rope-a-dope" policy before winning in the eighth. By doing so, he became only the second man to regain the heavyweight title.
Extensive highlights of that momentous night in the heart of Africa celebrate his against-the-odds victory while friends and critics reveal how Ali surpassed even himself in his greatest triumph. Narrated by Michael Parkinson. Producer Tony Moss ; Director Danny Fenton

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
