: George Gershwin Remembered

The man who opened up the concert hall to jazz died on 11 July 1937 at the tragically early age of 38. This
Omnibus film evokes the life and work of a major figure in 20th-century music through the eyes of the few surviving people who worked with him. The programme, which was nominated for a British
Academy Award and an American Emmy, includes extracts from Gershwin's best-known works including Porgy and Bess, An American in Paris (to be shown at
2.30pm), Shall We Dance and Lady Be Good. A wealth of unknown home movies and private recordings preserved in the Gershwin family complete the picture. Featuring contributions from Fred Astaire , Leonard Bernstein , Ella Fitzgerald. Judy Garland and Frances Gershwin Godowsky.

For the country wine-maker, the joys of long summer days are captured by the fragrant delicate flowers of the elder tree, which provides champagne, cordials and fruity fritters. : Absurdistan

Twenty years of communist rule created a Czechoslovakia which nicknamed itself
'Absurdistan'. It was a country where boiler-stokers had PhDs and jazz musicians were put in prison; where a striptease artist had to pass a communist audition. A happier kind of absurdity has now settled on Czechoslovakia, with the former outcasts in power. This journey reveals the extreme shifts of everyday life in Prague, and talks to prisoner, playwright and president Vaclav Havel , historian and window-cleaner Pavel Seifert , rock star and MP
Michael Kocab , film star and political outlaw Pavel Landevsky , writer and dustman Ivan Klima and jazz fiend and exile Josef Skvorecky.

: The Firemen's Ball

The annual firemen's ball in a provincial town is the highlight of the year. Right from the start, however, things go badly. Director MiloS Forman 's cruelly funny chronicle of disasters was his last film made in Czechoslovakia. Its satirical undertones led to the film's being held back temporarily and the production team's having to tour the country to placate angry firemen.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
