Nelson Mandela is attending this musical celebration of his new-found freedom after more than 25 years in South African prisons.
Among the stars playing today, before a live audience of 72,000 and a potential international television audience of over one billion, are:
Anita Baker, Tracy Chapman, Stanley Clarke, Natalie Cole, George Duke, Peter Gabriel, Abdulla Ibrahim, Patti Labelle, Daniel Lanois, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Simple Minds, Neville Brothers, Lou Reed, Stetsasonic, Dave Stewart, Bonnie Raitt and Neil Young.
Hosts are Lenny Henry and Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington.
