The Edelin Affair
On 3 October 1973, in Boston, Mass, Dr Kenneth Edelin performed a routine abortion on a 17-year-old unmarried Negro girl. Edelin was arrested and charged with .manslaughter of the foetus.
Edelin was a pawn in the bitter struggles in America about abortion, which have a stark relevance to the continuing abortion debate here. At what age does a foetus become a person? When does it become viable - capable of surviving apart from its mother? How is the ' moment of birth ' defined?
Tonight's programme presents a dramatised reconstruction of his trial - one of the most controversial in recent American history. Presented by ROBIN BATES
