The Cree Way
' There have always been things which would destroy the Indian, as they are trying to destroy him now. But the Indian fights back for everything ... and he is yet to be destroyed.'
To most Canadians the James Bay Territory is a wilderness. But to Geordie Georgekish and the other Cree Indians who live there it is a garden - a garden the size of Britain. Since long before the white man came they have harvested this land. In the sub-Arctic winters they live in teepees of wood and moss and set traps for beaver. In the summer they use their canvas teepees as bases for hunting and fishing trips. Despite the enormous pressures on them to change their way of life they are struggling to maintain this heritage they can pass on to their children.

The second of four feature film portraits of European artists, starring Anatoly Solonitsin , Nikolai Sergeyev
Fifteenth-century icon painter Andrei Rublev , one of the world's great artists, lived through the most turbulent period of Russia's chaotic history. TARKOVSKY'S epic film shown tonight for the first time in Britain in its full-length, original version, traces his artistic development through his relationship with another great painter, Theophanes the Greek, in the context of feudal violence surrounding them. Unlike Theophanes, Rublev painted man as essentially good, with a tenderness untainted by sentimentality.
