Throughout history the ' dowry ' has been part of the weddins arrangements. In 1971 young girls are still bought-and sold on the marriage market. Today in Yugoslavia the price is paid in land. In the Solomon Islands strings of shells and porpoise teeth must pass hands before the groom meets for the first time his bride-to-be.
