: Wheelbase: Wingspan

Gordon Wilkins covers the world of aviation.
The Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet was due to make its first passenger flight to London from New York yesterday.
What impact will this 350 seater have on airports and air travel? Does its size increase the risk of mid-air collisions? Why do pilots want more pay to fly it? Will the Jumbo make holiday inclusive tours to the sun and snow cheaper?
On the inaugural flight of the Boeing 747 the Wheelbase team takes to the air to examine the plane's effect on flying round the world.

: Four Great Painters Bruegel

Pieter Bruegel , the elder, died just over 400 years ago. He lived and worked in the Netherlands in the middle of the 16th century and was one of the great witnesses of his age. He described the lives of ordinary working men and women in town and country. In his paintings of religious subjects he placed biblical events in contemporary contexts and so described the facts of oppression and religious persecution. He showed realistic activity taken to fantastic extremes and described the fantastic in completely realistic terms. His terrifying vision of ' The Triumph of Death' anticipated by three-and-a-half centuries the familiar landscapes of modern war.

: Italian Cinema Michelangelo Antonioni's The Girl Friends

(Le Araiche)
This week's presentation in the series of feature films reflecting some of the finest work of many of Italy's most famous and talented directors and artists stars Eleonora Rossi-Drago Yvonne Furneaux Madeleine Fischer
A Rome couturier who returns to her native Turin to open a boutique becomes involved with a group of young women who lead empty, boring, and emotionally insecure lives.
Key to L'Avventura and many of Antonioni's later films, The Girl Friends is based on a melancholy tale by Cesare Pavese. The five female parts are beautifully cast, in particular Yvonne Furneaux as Momina.

About this project

This site contains the BBC listings information which the BBC printed in Radio Times between 1923 and 2009. You can search the site for BBC programmes, people, dates and Radio Times editions.

We hope it helps you find information about that long forgotten BBC programme, research a particular person or browse your own involvement with the BBC.

Through the listings, you will also be able to use the Genome search function to find thousands of radio and TV programmes that are already available to view or listen to on the BBC website.

There are more than 5 million programme listings in Genome. This is a historical record of the planned output and the BBC services of any given time. It should be viewed in this context and with the understanding that it reflects the attitudes and standards of its time - not those of today.

Welcome to BBC Genome

Genome is a digitised version of the Radio Times from 1923 to 2009 and is made available for internal research purposes only. You will need to obtain the relevant third party permissions for any use, including use in programmes, online etc.

This internal version of Genome, which includes all the magazine covers, images and articles as well as the programme listings from the Radio Times, is different to the version of BBC Genome that is available externally/to the public. It is only available inside the BBC network.

Your use of this version of Genome is covered by the BBC Acceptable Use of Information Systems Policy and these terms.
