It was only a matter of time before the title of this genial police drama inspired a dog-related storyline. Tonight Superintendent Sandra Pullman (Amanda Redman) and her team of veteran detectives are on the trail of a serial dog-killer who last struck in the 1970s. This canine Crippen not only murdered mutts, but also removed their internal organs.
The plot is preposterous, but it's attracted an impressive roster of guest stars including Michael Maloney (playing yet another creepy nutter, this time an abattoir employee), Frances de la Tour (as an eccentric Egyptologist) and Richard Briers (as a bumbling former canine protection officer).
Be warned: there are endless cracks about following "leads" and "barking up the wrong tree" and so on. It's what you'd call a real shaggy dog story. JR
