Goodnight Sweetheart
8.30pm BBC 1: The time-travelling comedy from Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran really does go back in time for this New Year episode. Gary (Nicholas Lyndhurst) is not at all keen to celebrate the event watching TV. His newly-redundant wife Yvonne (Michelle Holmes) is unhappy because she's "jobless and joyless and penniless". The only person who is full of good cheer is Gary's wartime girlfriend Phoebe (Dervla Kirwan) - but landlady Mrs Bloss aims to put a stop to that. How can Gary be with both the women in his life at midnight?

The Peacock Spring
9.00pm BBC1: Post-war India has provided fertile soil for films and TV dramas: witness the success of The Jewel in the Crown and all those Merchant/Ivory movies. Now it's the turn of novelist Rumer Godden to make it to the small screen with a two-part adaptation of The Peacock Spring.
It's set in 1959 in New Delhi, where diplomat Sir Edward Gwithian (Peter Egan) has engaged a new governess for his teenage daughters. When Una and her sister Hal arrive from England, they're hostile to their arrogant new "mother" and drawn to romance with "unsuitable" young men. Naveen Andrews (star of The Buddha of Suburbia) fits the bill as under-gardener Ravi.
The Peacock Spring concludes tomorrow evening.
