At this stage last year, Jeremy Bates ended a nine-year wait for a British men's victory on Centre Court by beating the German Marcus Zoecke to reach the last 16, and there were third round wins for holder Pete Sampras and three-times champion Boris Becker. In the women's singles, Martina Navratilova kept alive her hopes of a tenth title, and there were also wins for seeds Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, Jana Novotna and Helena Sukova.
