Alsace. In the third of six bike trips through France, Tom Vernon finds himself at the crossroads of Europe where France meets Germany and north meets south. Beginning in Strasbourg, home ofthe European Parliament, he goes south and discovers a family-run shop that sells 130 varieties of jam. Fortified by fine confectionery and tarte flambee, one of the world's fastest foods, his travels take him to the Maginot Line, a system of defences erected to protect the French from German attack during the Second World War.
