A film portrait of a year in the life of Her Majesty the Queen - to celebrate the 40th anniversary of her accession to the throne. A milestone in the history of broadcasting, with its unprecedented access behind the scenes at Buckingham Palace, the film records the daily and working life of the monarch in a year packed with incident.
It's the year of the Gulf War and the state visit to the USA, the G7 summit and the Commonwealth conference in Zimbabwe. For the Queen, the regular pattern of activities continues throughout. There are briefings and audiences (the film shows part of one with Prime Minister John Major), travel on the Royal train and the Queen's flight, private receptions and sumptuous banquets.
The full panoply of royalty is shown in preparations for a state banquet held in St
George's Hall, Windsor Castle, for the President of Poland, Lech Walesa. "The magnificence of this occasion - the gold plate, the flowers, the table that seats 160 people - was overwhelming," says
Edward Mirzoeff , who directed and produced the programme.
Her Majesty is also seen spending time in the other royal residences - Sandringham and Windsor, Holyrood and Balmoral. Time, too, for the Queen to relax with her family and grandchildren.
"I hope this film goes some way to increase the public's understanding of what the Queen's job is about and what she's really like," says Mirzoeff.
Narrated by Ian Holm.
