The highlight of the second week of the Prince and Princess of Wales's visit to Italy was an audience with His Holiness the Pope at the Vatican, a moment of solemnity away from the frenzied competition for pictures by the hundreds of photographers following the tour. Two days at sea also helped to give the royal couple respite as Britannia sailed up the Adriatic to deliver them to Venice, and a sparkling reception with all the tradition that famous city could muster.
