After the murder of a rich northern industrialist in a small Mississippi cotton town, a local policeman arrests a solitary Negro waiting at the railway station. But he is to find that the suspect is, in fact, Virgil Tibbs, a homicide expert from Philadelphia. Tibbs and the racially prejudiced police chief, Gillespie, work on the murder case despite personal and local tensions.
This compelling murder mystery won five Oscars, including a 'Best Actor Award' for Rod Steiger and 'Best Picture'.
